Google Unveils AI Model Called Gemini
Google has unveiled its latest AI model, Gemini, which is accessible through the chat bot Bard. Gemini comes in three versions, with Gemini Ultra generating the most excitement. In addition, Google has introduced LaMDA, a language model designed to engage in natural and interactive conversations with users. While the announcement initially had no impact on Google's stock price, analysts believe Alphabet could gain an advantage over competitors like OpenAI. Currently, Alphabet's stock is up by more than 5%.
There are three different versions of Gemini technology, but not all of them are currently available:
1. Gemini Pro: This version is accessible through Bard and is available for use now.
2. Gemini Nano: Designed to be integrated with Google's flagship smartphone, the Pixel 8 Pro.
3. Gemini Ultra: This is the version that is generating the most interest. It is touted to be more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4. Gemini Ultra is natively multi-modal, which means it has been pre-trained to understand and process both text and images. However, it is not yet available to the public. Google plans to roll it out to enterprise and developers first, with public access slated for the next year through Bard.
The introduction of Gemini is part of Google's strategy to create an AI that feels more like a helpful collaborator rather than just a smart piece of software. The market's initial reaction to the announcement of Gemini was relatively muted, with a delayed response in Alphabet's share prices. However, following the announcement, there was a substantial move higher in the shares.
Analysts have suggested that the muted initial reaction could be due to the perception that the Gemini product is not yet complete, especially since Gemini Ultra is not available until next year. Despite this, there is recognition of Alphabet's potential distribution advantage over OpenAI, which may be factored in by investors as they process this news.
